Planting Trees For Birth, Death and Marriage
This is the story of Ranmala village of Pune district where a unique tradition is followed by the locals. They plant tree on occasion of birth, death and marriage and vow to take care of them.
At a time this village was facing scarcity of water resources as a result of deforestation. Waterfall that occur in this region was not sufficient for the year to go. The only solution was tree plantation to come up with this situation. But the question was how to inspire peoples to plant trees and most important thing was to take care of them.
But there came a genius mind Mr. P.T. Shinde who proposed the idea of tree plantation on occasion of birth, death and marriage. This idea worked out and very soon it became popular in the whole village. Because this idea triggered the sentiments of the villagers, they planted a tree saplings and took care of them personally.
Planted 2,00,000 trees in just 15 years
In the period of 15 years the whole village has covered into a green lush of 2 lakh trees. The problem of water scarcity has also been solved.

The trees planted on the occasion of birth is said as “Janam Vriksha“, on the occasion of death is termed as “Maran Vriksha“. And on the occasion of marriage is termed as “Mangal Vriksha“
This project was started in year 2005, now the government of Maharashtra is planning to apply this project on other areas of state to solve the water scarcity problem.
